Yes indeedee, I think it mentions it at the start of the docco - and how wassisface Citizen Kane maker wasn't able to make his 'Hearts of Darkness' production successful. Damn, I really have forgotten his bloody name would you believe!! Ah- Orson. Whew. Nearly lost all cred there.
Anyway, I think the Tarantino story goes something like:
Quentin works in a video store.
He watches a lot of movies.
He learns film language.
He writes scripts
He sells scripts (eg True Romance)
He saves up some money
He calls Harvey Keital help make his film.
Harvey says yes - wow!!
The rest is common knowledge.
Incidently it was also Harvey that gave ol' Danny Cannon a little cred and an American audience for his 'Young Americans' or whatever it was called.
After Judge Dredd, what happened to him?? Either he's rich and laughing, dead, or working in Burger King.
I think the common theme is persistence. Take your (film) job seriously. But don't take yourself seriously.
I wonder if Boyle will make another film after The Beach -- anyone seen it?

after judge dredd, danny cannon did I still know what you did last summer, so from crap film to another

Ah, but at least he is still working then. Still in with a chance of going from PirahnaII to Terminator type thing...
(mind you, I only hear PirahnaII is crap, I haven't actually seen it)
-
Piranha II: The Spawning is very crap, Pirahna 1 wasn't brilliant either, however it just shows u how u can get credit after making shit, You wouldn't have thought that the director of Pirahna 2 could make films like, Abyess, Aliens (which in my opinon is the best one) Terminator, T2 and true lies, although i must admit i hate titanic!

Nobody ever said that Tarantino was a bad filmmaker. I think his films are great and should be admired.....just not copied (as so many out there attempt to do).
Think about it. How many times have you heard that some kid is making his first movie entitled something like THE INTERVIEW, which focuses on a group of slick talking, hip cats sitting around a coffie shop, and discussing "the job".......
What many people fail to realize is that what Tarantino does is exactly what Godard used to do. Mainly, as a critic of cinema, utilize aspects from the world of film in order to critique them. It's not simply 'stealing'. Godard was an original filmmaker.
To quote Godard, "The only way to review a film is to make a film."
I also agree with the guy up above who said that we should not take ourselves too seriously. We should not. But for fuck sakes, take your work seriously! It's all you've got. If you are going to use aspects from other films in your own work, do it for a reason.
Being successful in the film industry ($$$) isn't everything. Making good, interesting and original films should be above everything else.

In response to N. Foster Taylor's depressed and discouraging rebuke, I'd like to say give the kid a chance! Don't try to pretend to us that you are never want for ideas yourself. FutureFilmMan at least is thinking, where as it takes almost no braincells at all to just tell everyone to fuck off.
I personally would rather see to many movies than none at all.
-
I'm not telling anybody to fuck off. What is so depressing about movies being original, anyways? Do people have some sort of problem with not ripping off other stuff? It seems like it.
If I don't have any ideas, don't make a movie. That's not depressing. It's common sense. I wouldn't want to make a film based on another persons thoughts and ideas, unless I felt a strong relationship with the material; unless I was attracted to it. A basic 'idea' is not enough either. It would take a script with actual living and breathing characters, and a story. I would also probably do my own personal rewrite and polish to make it more my own in terms of attitude, outlook and sensibility.
This FutureFilmMan kid is a bullshit wannabe.

Why the hell are you so negative to people?
Why are you putting them down when you don't know them?
you say he is a "bullshit wannabe" so what
How many films have you made?
How many original films have you made without help from others?
Why are you even on here if your just going to insult people and put them off what they want to do?
Why don't you try and help someone instead?
if you can answer all of these honestly maybe people will listen to you
-
what kind of crap is that? everyone gets stuck for ideas sometimes, why should they not ask others for help? Kurbrick went to Speilberg for ideas, so should he have just stopped making films?
everyone starting out has ideas for movies that they are unable to make, because of their scale. so whats wrong in asking for ideas for a short movie?
Lets stop with the sterotypical kubrick wanking bullshit about "forgeting the audience" and "doing it for yourself". What filmakers do is put their PRECEPTION OF A STORY up on to the screen, not only for themselves but for everyone to enjoy.
are you sure you arent the bullshit wannabe?
